Women’s Health Enterprise, Inc., d.b.a. Family Health Enterprise, is a 501 c 3, non-profit health care organization founded by its Director, Dorothy Gallaway, in September 1994. Family Health Enterprise is unique in the state of Georgia as it is a Nurse Practitioner-managed organization committed to developing health care services in response to the expressed concerns of underserved communities. Nurse practitioners have advanced education and training and are able to assess and treat many complex health presentations. With a collaborative physician consultant agreement, Family Health Enterprise offers primary health care services to low-income communities throughout metro-Atlanta.

The clinic has expanded tremendously since its opening in 1994 and currently sees close to 10,000 patients each year. The clinic offers primary care to low-income and underserved communities throughout metro-Atlanta. With Medicaid and Medicare provider status, about half of those seen at the clinic are covered through Medicaid or Medicare while the other half does not have insurance. We strive to provide health care for those who cannot easily access the traditional health care system. Although we cannot eliminate all the barriers individuals face when seeking health care, we address such barriers as inability to pay for services, difficulty with transportation, language barriers, and disinterest from health care providers. Our motto, “we practice the spirit of caring,” is lived out every day in our practice.

Patients seen at Family Health Enterprise come from 17 different countries and five states. Families travel form Alpharetta, Mableton, Ellenwood, Marietta, and Lawrenceville to receive care. Established clients have journeyed from as far as Tennessee, South Carolina, and Minnesota for follow-up health care. We have received calls from New York, California, and Hawaii regarding our services.

Family Health Enterprise offers primary health care services, treatment of acute episodic illnesses and chronic disease management. In addition, we refer patients for specialty services when needed and follow up with them to ensure they have received the care they need. We have a strong network of over 40 physicians and specialty clinics which comprise our specialty referral system.

In addition to primary health care services, treatment of acute illnesses, and management of chronic conditions, Family Health Enterprise offers a variety of specialty services. Funding from the Susan G Komen Foundation, It’s the Journey, and BreasTest and More, allows the clinic to provide mammograms and Pap screens at no cost or reduced cost to low income women. We support every woman throughout the process of mammography and needed follow up. We stand beside women as they overcome fears and make important health decisions. These programs have made it possible for more than 1000 women to receive mammograms, with over 300 women receiving mammograms each year.

Family Health Enterprise has fully established itself as a clinic which provides excellent health care and is well respected in the health care community. We receive referrals from agencies and health care providers throughout the Atlanta area including the American Cancer Society, Mammography departments, the American Cancer Society, American-Latino Association, the United Way, and Sheffield Health Care Center.

Individuals face many barriers as they enter the health care system and Family Health Enterprise is committed to addressing these barriers. First, we provide affordable health care, accepting Medicaid and Medicare as well as offering services on an affordable fee-for-service basis. We also assist patients with transportation by driving patients to their appointments at Family Health Enterprise and to the mammography center. When patients are in need of specialty services, we set up appointments for them, ensuring that the practice to which we are referring will accept their insurance or offer them an affordable price if they are paying out of pocket. In addition, we assist people in applying for programs such as Cancer State Aid and Medicaid. Family Health Enterprise also provides culturally competent care. Several staff members speak Spanish so patients can receive health information and education in their language. The beliefs and practices of each individual and his/her community are considered in every treatment plan. We work with individuals to help them define their own strategies and goals for healthy living.
